Viagra may aid hypertensive pregnancies
APRIL 05, 2005
SAN DIEGO: In a recent finding, Viagra has been associated with hypertensive pregnancies. This came to light as the drug Viagra produced some very significant and beneficial effects on pregnancy-induced vascular adaptation and fetal outcome, a U.S. study found.
George Osol of the University of Vermont College of Medicine, Burlington, Vt., found Viagra, or sildenafil, helped arteries of the uterus grow in pregnant rats with induced hypertension suggesting that it may have increased blood flow to the uterus and placenta, the Times of London reported Monday. The drug was also found to increased fetal weights to normal values, compared with untreated hypertensive offspring whose weights were reduced by more than 20 percent and improved fetal mortality.
Osol called the study intriguing but "preliminary" and cautioned further study is needed to better understand how and why Viagra aids maternal uterine vascular adaptation and fetal health; whether similar benefits will occur in humans and whether there might be any harmful effects. sol and his team are presenting the research at the 35th Congress of the International Union of Physiological Sciences in San Diego.
