Viagra pulls back "Virgin" campaign after Pfizer complaints
APRIL 28, 2005
LONDON - Virgin Atlantic has been forced to pull
out an outdoor campaign that draws parallels between the use of
Viagra and Virgin Upper Class.
In a recent spate of events, Pfizer - the maker of Viagra - has
trademarked its shape, and forced Virgin Atlantic to remove the
ads, claiming they infringe its intellectual property.
The controversial work by Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe/Y&R
for Virgin, featured a diamond-shaped blue pill inscribed with "Virgin"
and the copy: "Virgin Upper Class Suite. The biggest, firmest,
longest bed in business."
A Pfizer statement said: "We have obtained agreement to immediately
discontinue the campaign and remove the advertisements."
Meanwhile, a Virgin spokeswoman said the ads would be removed in
the next few days; but it is still unclear if they will be replaced.
Virgin also had to revise ads for its new beds because they were
ambiguous. The ads' headline read "We're bigger than BA in
the bedroom department", while small print underneath claimed
the bigger beds were "rolling out across the fleet..."
However, the beds are only available on certain flights.
