Germans warned of pirated Viagra
Berlin, Germany, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- German industry group DIHK warned
consumers to beware of fake Viagra,
which has flooded into the country's black market.
The group said in 2003 some 46,700 imitation Viagra pills were seized by German authorities, the online version of German newsmagazine Der Spiegel reports.
That figure puts Viagra among the top 15 most confiscated items coming into Germany.
DIHK head Martin Wansleben said the confiscated pills ranged from harmless but worthless compounds to dangerous toxic chemicals.
Wansleben added that pirated goods could harm more than just unwitting consumers.
"The country loses tax income, (and) companies pay in market share and innovation capability," Wansleben said.
In addition to smuggled pirated products, Germans are thought to purchase a large number of pirated goods -- including pirated pharmaceuticals -- while on vacation abroad.
