Health India > Now, Viagra to help you mount Mt Everest!:
London, Aug 5(ANI):
Researchers at the University of Geissen in Germany claim that the anti-impotency drug Viagra can be used to treat lung problems associated with high altitude.
The finding which appear in the Annals of Internal Medicine reveal that
Viagra can be effectively used to cure pulmonary hypertension, a condition in which the blood vessels in the lungs constrict, making the heart work harder, thereby leading to heart damage and eventual death.
Experiments conducted on 14 mountaineers at both sea level and the
Everest Base Camp in the Himalayas revealed that compared to a dummy
pill, a Viagra (sildenafil)
to a large extent reduced the high blood pressure and improved the
oxygen transportation within the body.
"With the drug, more blood was going through the lung vessels, the gas exchange [the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the air and the blood in the lungs] improved and the heart's pumping capacity could be raised", the BBC quoted Dr Friedrich Grimminger who led the study as saying.
"It was good to be able to breathe freely again and no longer
feel that oppressive feeling on my chest", the channel quoted
a patient suffering from the condition as saying after being administered
sildenafil.
