Viagra on clinical trials for hypertension
Friday, December 23, 2005
Viagra, the popular
erectile dysfunction drug of Pfizer may soon prove to be an
equally effective medicine for the treatment of more indications.
Clinical trials carried out by the company have shown that Viagra
(sidenafil citrate)
is very effective in the treatment of pulmonary hypertension. While
the global trials confirming the ability of the drug to treat hypertension
are nearing completion, trials are also going on in India on the
new indication.
The signals emerging from the clinical trials of Viagra
are very positive. According to Dr Peter Ellis, executive director,
Pfizer UK, Viagra is being tested for half a dozen other indications
including hypertension. Right now the trials are in various stages
and have shown good response in several cases. Pfizer
is currently undertaking 34 clinical trials in India of which 24
are part of global trials, thereby showing its serious plans for
India.
