Impotence is linked with testicular cancer risk
December 02, 2005
Impotence or infertility
can lead to other medical complications. Recent findings suggest
that infertile or impotent
men, or men with abnormal sperm counts, are 20 times more likely
to develop testicular cancer. Therefore earlier diagnosis of testicular
cancer is a must in infertile men as it may improve men's chances
for long-term survival.
Patients and doctors should be aware of the fact
that one cause of male infertility is cancer, particularly testicular
cancer. To overcome this problem, screening for testicular cancer
should now become a standard part of all male infertility treatment
for preventing it at the onset.
The likelihood of finding testicular cancer in
infertile men is one in 500 men screened and in that case, early
diagnosis of testicular cancer is possible with a scrotal ultrasound
test.
