Medicare coverage of Viagra extended for another year
Wednesday, December 14, 2005
Due to the approval of Congressional negotiators,
the government has been allowed to pay for anti-impotence drugs
such as Viagra in federal health
programs for one more year before a ban on payments is imposed in
2007. As per a deal reached by Senate and House of Representatives
negotiators on Monday, federally run health care programs is going
to spend about $90 million this fiscal year to pay for patients'
erectile dysfunction drugs.
The House had previously voted for a ban on Medicare and Medicaid
payments for erectile dysfunction drugs
such as Pfizer Inc.'s Viagra in June 2005 and attached the prohibition
to a massive health-care funding bill for the fiscal year that began
on Oct. 1, 2005. But with the fiscal year well underway and the
funding bill still not completed, House and Senate negotiators scrapped
the ban for now due to worries that suddenly shutting off the funds
could create legal problems for the government.
