Statins may treat male impotence
February 22, 2006
According to a Philadelphia study, it was noticed
that the condition of some men suffering from impotence
or erectile dysfunction improved when statins, the drugs used to
treat high cholesterol were given to them. The findings by a team
at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School could be helpful
for the 10 to 30 percent of men who do not respond to Viagra
and similar drugs.
They may also be helpful for men who suffer from heart disease or
diabetes that could be causing their sexual problems. A small group
of patients in the double-blind study were given either Lipitor,
a statin or a placebo. They were then given a dose of Viagra. Doctors
say that the patients given Lipitor appear to have responded better
to Viagra, the prominent erectile
dysfunction drug.
