Do Women Need Female Viagra?

12 January 2005

The largest single difficulty women over thirty are having with their sexual health is lack of desire. In the spirit of modern medicine and capitalism, Proctor & Gamble were offering a new solution in the form of testosterone, to be marketed as “Intrinsa.” Wisely, and in the wake of chemical failures for some such as menopausal hormone treatments, Vioxx, and teen suicides allegedly produced by anti-depressants, the FDA has declined to approve the new drug until long-term trials become available.

Female Viagra wants to be similar to male Viagra, to promote certain physical responses in the body that mimic sexual arousal. For male arousal, there is no mimicking. The p---- is hard, or it’s not. For most women desire is entwined firmly in how they feel about themselves as human, and how they feel about their partners. People have used mood-altering substances through the millenniums to get reluctant sex partners “in the mood.”

In my clinical experience, women who lack desire for sex are beset by a myriad of cultural and sociological taboos that say women who enjoy sex are whores (even if they’re married), or, if they are finished bearing children, are too old for sex.

What is the mental health professions’ response to the lack of desire? Most plan according to current protocol. Chemical imbalances in the brain have been manipulated successfully for the overwhelming majority of people who seek treatment by drugs. Medical professionals usually admit that for diagnoses such as depression and anxiety, a combination of drugs and talk therapy has the highest degree of efficacy.

Sometimes this means experimenting with a combination of drugs and dosages that may take several months, before the optimum balance is achieved. Teen brains are not yet fully formed, and require different balancing. Many personality disorders do not show the full extent of the difficulty until the early adult years. Drugs may provide some relief from symptoms of depression and anxiety, and often these are underlying causes or contributing factors to lack of desire.

I have had personal experience with long-term drug trials, after being on birth control pills for twenty-five years, and then depo-provera for another five. My recent experience has been an almost overwhelming desire for sex, once I finally went off the hormones. I’m pretty much convinced that chemical birth control included a conspiracy to rob women of their sexual desire. “Oh sure, they’ll be able to have recreational sex more often, but they won’t want to.”

As with any perceived imbalance, or thinking difficulties that impair a person from living life to the fullest, the person must have a goal of changing to address the problem. If you are experiencing a problem with sexual desire, I can recommend a counselor.
