Man arrested for making fake Viagra, Cialis
January 14, 2006
A man has been arrested in east China's Zhejiang
Province for making millions of pills of fake erectile dysfunction
drugs Viagra and Cialis, local police said Friday.
A total of 280,000 tablets of fake Viagra
and 1.41 million fake Cialis, worth 238 million yuan (29 million
U.S. dollars) on the market, have been seized, according to the
Public Security Bureau of Shaoxing City.
Wang Weiping, a legal person of the Kangdeli Health Care Co. Ltd
in Xinchang County of Shaoxing City, was arrested in Hangzhou, capital
of Zhejiang, on early morning of Nov. 16 last year, police said.
Wang was suspected of making and selling fake drugs, police said.
Wang's workshop and equipment to make fake drugs was seized later
in Guannan County, Lianyungang City of Jiangsu Province, Zhejiang's
neighboring province.
Wang was taken into custody for five months in 2003, also on the
same charges as this time, police said.
Currently, local police and drug administration officials are looking
further into the case in a hope to root out the network of manufacturing
and selling fake drugs.
Viagra is produced by
the New York-based Pfizer Pharmaceuticals Limited and Cialis is
manufactured by Indianapolis-based Lilly Icos LLC. Both are well-known
drugs to treat impotence.
