Pfizer puts RFID tags on the large bottles of Viagra
January 18, 2006
Pfizer, the manufacturer of famous erectile
dysfunction drug announced last week that it will combat counterfeiters
of their patented drug Viagra by sticking radio-frequency ID (RFID)
tags on large bottles of Viagra. Pfizer
follows on the heels of Purdue Pharma, which began tagging every
100-tablet bottle of the painkiller OxyContin since 2004 for controlling
the fake drug business.
Viagra puts RFID tags on the
large bottles of Viagra that sit on pharmacy shelves and hold 50
or 100 pills each. But in reality, most patients get much smaller
refills. But if a patient gets an extra-large supply of Viagra in
case he is planning for an eventful vacation then he might get the
large, RFID-tagged bottle. The RFID tags can prove the authenticity
of the drug.
