Sexologist warns of the dark side of the love pill
By Ghafar Ali
5 july 2004
PESHAWAR: Use of the sex pill Viagra advised by unqualified doctors has caused serious health problems to the people, sexologist Dr Muzaffar Tareen while speaking at a seminar held at a local hotel on Friday.
“I have seen eight patients during the last few months, who
had developed acute renal problems, because of the wrong use of
Viagra prescribed to them
by unqualified doctors for sex-related problems,” He said
Viagra had revolutionised the treatment of erectile
dysfunction in the United States, but its misuse and prescription
by unqualified doctors had been causing problems to its users. He
said around 65 percent cases of erectile dysfunction could be treated
through psychotherapy, because the problem was primarily related
to the patient’s state of mind, he said.
Mr Tareen said Viagra had been introduced to treat hypertensive patients,
but later on studies revealed that it was effective for the patients
suffering from erectile
dysfunction.
He said the hot-selling drug had so far killed scores of people in the US, who had used it without the advice of doctors, said Dr Tareen, who has done his masters in sexology from California. “It is as effective in females as in men, but should be used upon the prescription of sexologists”, he warned.
He said the drug should be taken on an empty stomach and was strictly prohibited for people having hypertension, cardiac problems and diabetes.
Viagra is available in 25, 50 and 100 milligram doses.
Dr Tareen said that the pill’s side effects included headaches, flushing, abdominal pain and blurring of vision.
He said the drug has yet to be registered in Pakistan, but was available in more than 20 names. “The Lahore-based pharmaceutical companies import the cheap raw materials from China and pump it into the local market at such a scale that it is hard even for doctors to identify its fake version with the genuine one”, he said.
He urged the doctors to take complete history of patients, followed by relevant investigations and treatment. Dr Tareen said psychological and nervous problems were also the main causes of sex problems, but doctors, who were not trained in the emerging field of sexology, caused problems to the people by prescribing them a drug as dangerous as Viagra in a bid to earn money.
