Now - pink Viagra

June 23, 2004

Lots of British women complain their sex life is dismal - with many blaming it on a loss of libido. In fact a lack of desire is the most common female sex problem, with up to 40% of women saying they find it difficult to get turned on.

As women age, the sex hormone levels enjoyed by girls in their teens and 20s fall. Until now, doctors have not been able to turn back the clock and give women the sexual buzz of their youth.

But a "pink Viagra" - in the form of a testosterone patch - will be on the market within two years to boost flagging female sex drive.

Meanwhile, some women in the UK are already being offered a new treatment by anti-ageing specialists. A cocktail of the missing hormones, including the controversial product testosterone, is, say patients, making them feel sexy, energetic, happy and confident again.

New research published this month in the magazine New Scientist has revealed testosterone soars when a woman falls in love. And it is this hormone - normally linked to men, but found in both the sexes - that is providing the magic formula.

"Testosterone is one of the most important hormones for a woman's sex drive," says Dr Cecilia Tregear, a London doctor and rejuvenation expert.

"It also gets rid of tiredness, tones the body and makes a woman look and feel more attractive.

"It makes her turn on more easily and gives her orgasms which are deeper, more powerful, longer-lasting and frequent.

"The feeling of falling in love is a reaction in the brain to a whole array of hormones, but testosterone ... gives a woman her flirtiness and sex appeal. It makes her aware of the men around her - and seems to make men notice her, too."
Anti-ageing medicine is an alternative to more radical solutions to sex appeal, such as cosmetic surgery.

Tregear gives her patients a natural form of testosterone made from wild yam. It comes in a gel, which is easily absorbed by the skin.

Before treatment, patients' blood and urine are checked to see which hormones are deficient. Each patient is then given an individually tailored prescription for anti-ageing hormones. - Daily Mail
