Viagra ingredient launched for a rare lung disorder
March 08, 2006
Revatio, a drug with the same active ingredient
as the popular erectile
dysfunction drug Viagra will be offered to patients suffering
from a rare life-threatening condition known as pulmonary arterial
hypertension. People suffering with the condition have increased
pressure in the blood vessel that leads from the heart to the lungs.
There are around 4,000 UK sufferers, with around 4,000 believed
to be undiagnosed. A clinical program conducted by pharmaceutical
giant Pfizer have found that the ingredient of Viagra
can reduce blood pressure in the artery and improves the ability
of PAH patients to exercise.
Revatio has been launched in the UK for the treatment of pulmonary
arterial hypertension (PAH), a rare lung disorder that most commonly
affects women aged between 20 to 40. Revatio has the same active
ingredient as Viagra - sildenafil. It was launched in Germany in
January, 2006 and in the USA in August, 2005.
